See. Much better.
Weekends in our house are pretty great. Most times a homemade breakfast in our pj's, some fresh squeezed orange juice here n there, (who am i kidding, this stuff makes a mess.... its EVERYWHERE but i love it.) Cartoons are playing, toys are flying through the air as we play with hunter in the floor and then after the morning magic is gone, we go grocery shopping for the week and for our family dinner.
We don't get a ton of time together as we are both working parents so we try to do a big family meal every weekend. Now don't get me wrong. We eat dinner as a family everynight but our weekend family dinner is much more, lets say, done up right.
Our weekend family dinner is when we find a recipe that really needs some time to prepare. For example, one weekend we had peppercorn crusted steaks with a gorganzola cream sauce, sauteed spinach, and topped with a few buttermilk and corn meal crusted fried onions. ( yuuuuum) plus dessert! (If this doesn't sound good to you even a little bit then I am afraid you hate food aaaand we can no longer be friends. :) )
We cook it as a family (well hunter loves stirring empty tupperware). Its totally old school with the cooking apron and all. No tv or phones just us, music, and a glass of wine. We eat to oldies music playing, candles lit, and with our linen napkins. (linen napkins because they are more environmentally friendly, not because they are all fancy.)
I even made fresh butter this week for it!! (don't make that look! It's SO SO easy!!) Literally, you put fresh cream (or whipping cream from the store) into a mixer and after awhile the cream seperates into milk and buttermilk!!! I'm even going to save the buttermilk to make fresh buttermilk pancakes in the morning! (my sister in law told me about this and I am telling you, you will never eat store bought butter again. Mmmmmm Mmmmm)
(We have milk, eggs, cheese, meat, etc delivered from an organic dairy farm here. Just found it a few weeks ago! If you know of a dairy in your area, I highly recommend trying the milk and dairy products! Its uncanny how yummy it tastes! If your into whole milk you can even scrape fresh cream right off the top of the milk.)
I poured the buttermilk back into the cream container for pancakes and washed the butter with ice cold water to get all the buttermilk off so it stays fresh longer. We always used to buy the fresh churned butter from the same dairy but now I know how to make it!! We don't eat alot of butter but when we do nothing beats this stuff. I'm ordering more cream on this next weeks' delivery to get some in the freezer ready to go.
After dinner, with our bellies swollen, we clean up all the dishes, pick up the kitchen, rest, play, and then we sit down for dessert. Recently, I made a honey chocolate cake.(our new favorite) The recipe calls it a honey "bee" cake. So OF COURSE bees must be made. :)
The bees are marzipan, almond flakes, and I used some of the honey chocolate sticky sauce to draw on the stripes and eyes.
Hunter playing on a few occasions before dessert...
Hunter had a blast helping make and eat the bees. Plus the house smells AMAAAAZING with this thing in the oven. I even got to get a springform pan from my kitchen "want" list to make it! (ya know, the "I really want it now but don't really need it yet, put it on a list so I don't forget it", want list.) I love the yellow because it makes it feel vintage.
I'm pretty sure hunter liked the cake...or should I say the chocolatey, moist, honey tasting, drop of heaven! Here is his first bite...
Aaaaand the next bite.
I'm sold. I'll be making this one again.
Here's hoping your weekends are as fattening as ours!! (Now you know why we are such healthy eaters during the week....we are saving up for our family dinner....Stinson style.)
